About Lakeland

With its picturesque lakes, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, Lakeland is a city that harmoniously blends the old with the new, offering a unique charm that captivates the hearts of its residents and visitors alike.

Lakeland's rich history is reflected in its well-preserved buildings and districts that date back to the early 20th century. The city was founded in 1885 and quickly flourished as a hub for the railroad industry. Its historic downtown area, adorned with charming brick streets and vintage storefronts, offers a glimpse into the past, where one can admire the architectural grandeur of the Polk Theatre and the Terrace Hotel.

As its name suggests, Lakeland is home to an array of beautiful lakes that dot the landscape, providing stunning vistas and recreational opportunities. Among the most notable is Lake Mirror, a central jewel surrounded by the lush Hollis Garden, which showcases a stunning array of flora. The lakes are not only a source of beauty but also a haven for wildlife, making them perfect for birdwatching, fishing, and boating.

Lakeland boasts a thriving cultural scene that celebrates both the arts and the community. The Polk Museum of Art, a Smithsonian affiliate, offers an impressive collection of contemporary and ancient works, while Florida Southern College is home to the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. The city's calendar is brimming with events and festivals, such as the annual Sun 'n Fun Fly-In, which attracts aviation enthusiasts from around the globe.
